We have a wonderful Pastoral Care Leader at ECNS.
Hilary Smith started with us in January of this year and is also the Youth Pastor at Trinity CRC.
Let’s learn a little more about her!
What is a typical day/week like at school for you?
I have a few main things that fill my time as I am at the school. I meet with students 1-1 and provide pastoral care. I plan for chapel and write messages. I host “open chapels” for students and we have a prayer group once a week. In addition, I facilitate classes in the chapel room.
Where are you from originally / where did you grow up?
I grew up in a small town in northern BC called Houston. When I was 12, I moved to South Dakota with my family. We lived in 2 places, but I spent the most time in Sioux Falls. I moved to Edmonton when I was 18 to attend The Kings University.
Who is your biggest role model?
One of the biggest influences in my life was Francis Chan. His book “Crazy Love” changed my life in my early 20’s. As for current role models, I’d say my dad, our lead pastors – Rich deLange and Michael McGowan, and Pastor Michelle Kool of Covenant CRC.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy backpacking, hiking, walking, reading, campfires, playing games, eating, watching movies, and doing all these things with friends.
What is most rewarding about your job?
I am very aware that I am a part of a student’s story. It is very rewarding when a student high 5’s me, gives me a hug, or wants to engage in a conversation. This gives me life and assures me I am contributing positively to their story and ultimately in the Grand Story.
What is your favourite thing about working at ECS?
I flourish in spaces when I am free to be creative to use my gifts. ECS gives me that space. All the things I do I am passionate about. I love being able to dream and making those dreams reality.
What does true leadership mean to you?
The first word that comes to mind is: empowering. True leadership is the ability to raise up people without fearing their success.
Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
I used to work for Disney when I lived in China.
